**WARNING** Sunglasses may be required!

Well...today i made jet another nappy (because he can never have enough!). Why is it bright orange? well, for a couple of reasons. 1. because i have 2m of velour & microfleece 2. because the in-laws are dutch & thats their national colour & 3. well...why not!

This time round i used the Ottobre pattern. This pattern has 2 sizes, i used the largest one because jet is getting a bit big for the s/m wee weka pattern so i figured the smaller size might not fit for long on this pattern....but the nappy is massive!!! So i guess it will fit him eventually & for now i can stuff it with heaps & use it as a night nappy - jet is a massivly heavy wetter!!!

Ok, heres the nappy (its a little bright!):

The inner is made from orange (in case you couldnt tell) velour:

& the outer is made with microfibre:

There is a hidden layer of white PUL & I used blue snaps, I do have orange ones that match but I thought id throw in a bit of contrast (so DH has a chance of putting it on the right way). I used blue because its DH's favorite colour & he is sick of me using purple for everything & also because the orange & blue chakras are opposite - so the colours are opposite polarities (or something).

Here are some action shots:

I sewed the elastic onto the outer layer (through all the layers though) but the inner material is still rolling out? not sure what happend there - its the first time ive done that, figured it didnt really matter since both sides were soft.

I also overlocked some microfibre inserts. They are 3 layers each very doddgily sewn together, but they do the trick! They have already been through the wash thats why there all fluffy:

well, thats enough sewing for one day, now im off to clean up all the mess i made.

Material, Material & more Material

I ordered some material through a co-op & i received a package yesterday & today - lucky me!!!

Heres a pic of the PUL i received yesterday. i just got 50cm but its over 2m wide! The part on the left side of the pic is the outer bit of the material, its kinda ribbed & the bit on the right is the inner, its quite rubbery, think ill use it as an inner layer.

Next up (in the same package) is some blue microfibre, think i got about 2m of this one:

Then today i received some yummy orange velour & microfleece - 2m of each. This is a pic of the velour:
& heres the microfleece, this one has been through the wash once already:

Think ill have to make a pocket with orange velour inner & microfleece outer & a PUL hidden layer, although if i do that DH is going to have absolutly no idea which side is which ;)

No chanting in this house!

Jet really doesnt like the "om" noise - no idea why! he just gets grumpy when ever you do it - so much for "merging with the cosmic vibration" (om means something like that doesnt it?). I know im mean for doing it but its just too cute & i had to share, promise i wont do it any more, just had to get it on tape in case he turns out to be a buddhist munk or something. i gave him a big hug after i filmed it!!!

Looks like i wont be able to take him to mums & bubs yoga anytime soon!!!

make sure you turn the sound on & wait till the page is fully loaded.

Reasons to use Cloth Nappies

Heres a web site i found with just some of the reasons why i use cloth nappy my most precious little boy - http://babyslime.livejournal.com/151952.html#healthy

This is an exert:

Why are cloth diapers healthier for my baby?Disposable
diapers contain a super absorbant chemical inside their plastic casing called
sodium polyacrylate, which pulls fluid away from the baby's skin and holds it
inside the diaper. This chemical causes allergic reactions, was removed from
tampons after being linked to toxic shock syndrome, is lethal to to some animals
on inhalation, and lab testing [when injected] has shown it to cause
haemorrhage, cardiovascular failure and death.Dioxin, a byproduct of the
bleaching process, is the most toxic of cancer-linked chemicals according to the
EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Even in barely detectable amounts it has
been known to cause liver disease, immune system supression and genetic damage
in lab animals. It can also cause birth defects. No level of dioxin has been
established as safe for human exposure. Every American has a measurable amount
in their body, and its half-life is seven years. Over thirty pounds of it are
released every year.

The FDA regularly receives complaints from illness or injury associated
with the usage of disposable diapers, this includes babies pulling the diapers
apart and ingesting pieces, skin being torn from the tabs, plastic melting into
the skin, dizziness, rashes, headaches and many other problems.

"In 1987, the Sunday Democrat and Chronicle published news about
the new Pampers Ultra. The new gel they used caused severe skin irritations, oozing blood from perineum and scrotal tissues, fever, vomiting, and staph infections in babies. Employees in Pampers factories suffered from tiredness, female organ problems, slow-healing wounds and weight loss. According to the Journal of Pediatrics, 54% of one-month old babies using disposable diapers had rashes, 16% had severe rashes. A survey of Procter & Gamble’s own studies show that the incidence of diaper rash increases from 7.1 percent to 61 percent with the increased use of throwaway diapers, great for manufacturers of diaper rash medicines. Widespread diaper rash is a fairly new phenomenon that surfaced along with disposable diapers. Reasons for more rashes include allergies to chemicals, lack of air, higher temperatures because plastic retains body heat, and babies are probably changed less often because they feel dry when wet."
This chemical remains in the diapers today.

In 2000 a
German study linked male infertility to the use of disposable
diapers. The scrotum hangs away from the body to keep it cool - high
temperatures reduce sperm count and motility. This study found that during
diapering years the scrotal temperature was significantly higher, and in some
the natural cooling system was completely abolished.

Even the dyes in disposable diapers have been linked to health problems
similar and just as serious as the ones mentioned above.

As far as the sanitation issue, studies have shown that disposable and
cloth diapers are equally sanitary. As far as spreading germs what matters is
not what the diaper is made of but how it and the baby are handled. Hand-washing
being the most influencial factor.

Baby in a Bucket!

After seeing a link about Tummy Tubs i decided to start bathing Jet in a bucket since he has definetly outgrown the laundry tub (keeps kicking off the side & bumping his head) & its quite difficult to take him in the shower. We had a spare nappy bucket so ive just been using that, its quite big compared to a normal bucket i think but it works a treat! makes it so easy to bath him because he can stay upright all by himself so i dont always have to be holding him (i keep a close eye on him ofcourse) and its more fun for him cause he can play with his toys, trys to shove them all in his mouth ofcourse!

anyway, i highly recommend giving it a go! here are some pics of my bucket baby:

& this one is my fave, he hates it when you put water on his head :)

Pics of my Tiger!

Ok, as promised here are the action shots of my latest creation:

One last pic of my little tiger mauling his prey (aka toy frog):

It is pretty chunky on him, i probably could have used less layers in the booster. i might just make a non fold out one with just 2 or 3 layers of bamboo fleece & a layer of fleece & just use this booster for nights.

Hes only worn it once so far & had it on for about 7 hours (i dont normally leave them that long but he was sleeping and i wanted to test it). There were no leaks & it still felt pretty dry to touch from the inside (agains his skin). The bamboo didnt even feel that wet, so maybe its just super absorbant or maybe he just didnt do any of his normal massive wees in it! hopefully it will be fine tommorow so itll dry quick & i can give it another run!!!

The pic to the right is the pattern i used. Its the wee weka s/m pocket pattern but i modified it a bit. The modified bits are in yellow. I think i really need ot leave the width of the long section alone (whats that called???), even though its only the tiniest bit wider the origional pattern just fits so much better...i know, i know, so why do i keep changing it!!!

Next time i will leave the whole top section of the pattern as is and just make the base slightly bigger than the origional pattern so it fits him a smigin longer. Thanks for checkin out my blog!!!

Tiger Butt!!!

Ok, since its obvious that i like making animal print nappies i thought id give a tiger butt a go!

Couldnt find the tiger print anywhere, ended up buying a cheap fleece blanket from coles ($5 i think) & cutting that up.

This is my first go at using the snap press & it wasnt nearly as scary as i thought it would be. Its also my first attempt at an AI2 nappy (All in Two).

I used the wee weka s/m pocket nappy pattern but i adjusted it a bit.
The nappy consists of 2 layers of fleece + a bit extra in the wet zone. The booster snapps in and folds out for quicker drying. It consists of 1 layer of fleece & 2 layers of bamboo fleece for the top bit & the bottom bit is just 3 layers of bamboo fleece.

If i thought my sewing skills were doddgy my overlocking skills are even worse, theres lots of loose loops, not sure how they got there! & i only have white overlocking thread (even if i did have black im not sure i would have tried to change it - thats a task & a half in itself!!!).

Its quite thick with all the layers of fleece & bamboo fleece & the leg elastic doesnt really look even but it should go ok.

No action shots yet cause jet is asleep (i know...i cant believe it either!).

Its a wrap!

Heres a pic of Jet in a home made Hug-a-bub style sling. I just used a 100% cotton, it isnt streatchy though & it creases heaps. i might have to give it a go with another fabric, but i do love the colour & he actually likes being in it which is a bonus!!!
